BrandCat adds Germany DPMA Trademark Watching

BrandCat now includes trademark monitoring for Germany through DPMA, the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (Deutsches Patent- und Markenamt).

Why DPMA matters, especially if we already monitor WIPO and EUIPO filings?

Germany has a substantial national trademark system of its own. In 2025 alone, 93,291 national trademark applications were filed directly through DPMA, and 909,659 German national trademarks were in force at the end of the year.

That is separate from both EU trademarks filed through EUIPO and international Madrid registrations designating Germany. In the same year, DPMA reported 3,037 international requests for protection in Germany through the Madrid system, alongside 55,863 national registrations.

That means monitoring EUIPO and WIPO alone still leaves a substantial stream of German national trademark filings uncovered.

What it looks like in practice: German trademark matches in the BrandCat results view

The DPMA source can be selected in the trademark-office filter alongside the rest of BrandCat's trademark-office coverage. Results show the trademark, owner or applicant, Nice classes, application or registration number, filing date, status, and source office.

German-language goods and services can be translated into English in the preview mode, while the original source text remains available for context. This makes it easier to do a first-pass review without losing sight of the original registry wording.

Showing the details: English translations together with the original German text

German trademark records are, perhaps inconveniently for non-Germans, usually provided in German. If your German is a little rusty, BrandCat helps by keeping the original source text visible while also showing translated text where available.

For example, the original description:

Orthopädische Artikel; Medizinische Kompressionsstrümpfe und -strumpfhosen

is shown in English as:

Orthopaedic articles; Medical compression stockings and tights

It is not a certified legal translation, of course, but it does make the record much faster to understand on first review.

What the DPMA integration includes

  • Matching German trademark records against watched names
  • Structured and normalized DPMA trademark records
  • Application and registration numbers
  • Owner and correspondent information from the source record
  • Nice classes and Goods and Services descriptions
  • English translations where available alongside the original German text
  • Application, registration, and expiry dates
  • Raw registry status and a consistent review status in the BrandCat results list
  • The same detail, filtering, portfolio, alert, report, and CSV workflow used for other trademark offices

German national filings are not redundant with EUIPO or WIPO

A German trademark filing is not the same thing as an EU trademark and not the same thing as a Madrid registration either. Those systems answer different questions.

If somebody files directly with DPMA, that filing may still be commercially important even if there is no corresponding EUIPO filing or WIPO record. For businesses focused on Germany, local distribution, manufacturing, retail, or a Germany-specific enforcement strategy, those national filings can matter a great deal.

Dates and record details that actually matter

Once you determine that a filing may represent a risk to your brand, the key dates become much more important. Depending on the record, BrandCat can show the application date, registration date, and expiry date, together with the owner, correspondent, Nice class information, and the full goods and services wording.

That means you do not have to keep jumping between raw registry pages and your own notes just to understand what the filing covers and who is behind it.

DPMA fits into the same review workflow

All DPMA data are normalized into the same BrandCat workflow, so reviewing a German trademark record should feel the same as reviewing a record from the US, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Brazil, or other supported jurisdictions.

The goal is not just to collect one more database. It is to make German national trademark activity reviewable in the same practical workflow as the rest of your monitoring.
